Steven Wright Continues to Impress for the Red Sox

Sometimes-minor-leaguer Steven Wright, known for his knuckleball, has been surprising everyone as a power player this season, filling the void created by David Price’s inconsistent pitching.

The Red Sox got off to a slow start then followed it up with a fairly hot start. However, an off-and-on problem for the Sox so far this season has been their starting pitching. Coming into this season, it was almost a sure thing that David Price would be the ace of this staff beginning to end. But Price has had a difficult time finding his groove, seeing the speed of his fastball dip.
Regardless, two men have taken control of the rotation, and that has been Rick Porcello and Steven Wright. Porcello’s good year isn’t a total surprise; even though last season was bad, he did have a solid year with the Tigers before joining the Sox. The real surprise here is Steven Wright, the knuckleballer that has split a lot of time between Boston and Pawtucket. Often pitching out of the bullpen, it was an interesting development to see Wright in the starting rotation, and so far he hasn’t disappointed.
Steven Wright has surprised much of Red Sox Nation with his pitching performance this season, capped off by a brilliant performance last night in the Bronx against the Yankees. Wright pitched a complete game three hitter against the Sox’s biggest rivals, which was especially important after the Sox dropped the first two of a three-game set in New York. However, like I said, this was just the cherry on top of what has been an insane start for a pitcher that really had no prior big league success up to this point.
So far this season, Steven Wright has pitched 41.1 innings and gone 3-3 with a microscopic 1.52 ERA. He has been seemingly unhittable, and leaving many Sox fans wondering if his torrid start will come to a screeching halt, or if he is the true number two starter once David Price finds his stride.
Regardless of whether or not Wright maintains this level of play, his contribution at this point of the season has been massive. Wright has been keeping the staff afloat along with Porcello in a time when they need it. Price has struggled with inconsistency this season, going back and forth from Cy Young quality starts to number five starter outings. We have to maintain faith that Price will find his form, but in the meantime, let’s all just be thankful for Steven Wright.
